IN-PERSON PROGRAM
Join our Birding with Me program! Get to know our local feathered friends while in community outdoors. Led by biologist Andrew Huang, this walk will introduce you to the birds found at Iona Beach Regional Park. See birds like Western sandpipers, yellow-rumped warblers, and red-winged blackbirds while meeting new people and sharing in the outdoors. The walk will also lead you to WildResearch’s Iona Island Bird Observatory, a bird banding station that has been monitoring birds at Iona since 2010. This event is part of the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration!
This event is reserved specifically for LGBTQ2S+ individuals, in order to provide a safe and inclusive space to explore birding and nature.
Birding with Me was made possible through the financial support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation’s National Anti-Racism Fund.

LEADER BIO
Hello! My name is Andrew and I’m currently a biologist at the Canadian Wildlife Service. Growing up in Taipei and Vancouver, I never took notice of the wildlife around me despite always being surrounded by the water and mountains. It wasn’t until university that I started noticing the diversity of birds and other wildlife around me, and that you really don’t have to go far from your house to see them. Did you know that Richmond isn’t just about eating delicious dumpling soup noodles or taking a stroll in a fishing wharf? At Iona, you will be dazzled by the diversity and abundance of birds! This 2-hour trip at Iona will include a visit to a banding station to see songbirds close-up, as well as a bird walk through the marshes, beaches, and forests. I look forward to meeting you all!
ABOUT “BIRDING WITH ME” SERIES

Inspired by the National Audubon Society’s Let’s Go Birding Together series, Birding with Me walks welcome in experts and participants of shared identity to explore birding together and meet new people.

The land on which we gather is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. Their stewardship and respect for this land has carried forward for thousands of years long before settlers named it “Stanley Park”.
