SUMMARY:Birding with Me: Welcoming the LGBTQ2S+ Community
DESCRIPTION:Register\n Problems using the registration form below? You can also register here. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON PROGRAM \n\n\n\nJoin our Birding with Me program! Get to know our local feathered friends while in community outdoors. Led by biologist Andrew Huang\, this walk will introduce you to the birds found at Iona Beach Regional Park. See birds like Western sandpipers\, yellow-rumped warblers\, and red-winged blackbirds while meeting new people and sharing in the outdoors. The walk will also lead you to WildResearch’s Iona Island Bird Observatory\, a bird banding station that has been monitoring birds at Iona since 2010. This event is part of the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration! \n\n\n\nThis event is reserved specifically for LGBTQ2S+ individuals\, in order to provide a safe and inclusive space to explore birding and nature. \n\n\n\nBirding with Me was made possible through the financial support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation’s National Anti-Racism Fund. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE GREATER VANCOUVER BIRD CELEBRATION \n\n\n\nGet more familiar with the birds around us during the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration! Organized by a collection of non-profits\, artists\, and other institutions\, the Celebration is a two-week series of events to appreciate the bird species of Greater Vancouver. Events are open to all and most are free\, with programs including bird-related workshops\, walks\, talks\, exhibitions\, and lectures. Check out all the events here: https://vancouverbirdcelebration.ca/ \n\n\n\nLEADER BIO \n\n\n\nHello! My name is Andrew and I’m currently a biologist at the Canadian Wildlife Service. Growing up in Taipei and Vancouver\, I never took notice of the wildlife around me despite always being surrounded by the water and mountains. It wasn’t until university that I started noticing the diversity of birds and other wildlife around me\, and that you really don’t have to go far from your house to see them. Did you know that Richmond isn’t just about eating delicious dumpling soup noodles or taking a stroll in a fishing wharf? At Iona\, you will be dazzled by the diversity and abundance of birds! This 2-hour trip at Iona will include a visit to a banding station to see songbirds close-up\, as well as a bird walk through the marshes\, beaches\, and forests. I look forward to meeting you all! \n\n\n\nABOUT “BIRDING WITH ME” SERIES \n\n\n\nCome Birding with Me and learn about our local birds on free\, guided bird walks that celebrate diversity in bird and human communities. Inspired by the National Audubon Society’s Let’s Go Birding Together series\, Birding with Me walks welcome in experts and participants of shared identity to explore birding together and meet new people. \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \n\n\n\nAccessibility notes: This program will move at a moderate pace along mostly level paths of dirt and concrete. Iona Beach is out in the open along the water and can be windy\, so please be prepared for exposure to the elements. If you have any questions or input about accessibility\, please email publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca \n\n\n\nThis program will meet at Iona Beach Regional Park\, Richmond\, by the public washrooms. Please try to arrive 15 minutes in advance of the program. \n\n\n\nTerms and Conditions \n\n\n\n(1) Registration required - NO DROP-INS ARE ALLOWED.  This program is free! If you register and no longer can make it\, please email us at publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca so we can offer the space to another participant. \n\n\n\n(2) Weather – Our tours typically run rain or shine. Rarely\, programs may be postponed or cancelled due extreme weather like high winds or extreme heat.  We will alert you by email if the program needs to be rescheduled. \n\n\n\nThe land on which we gather is the traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. Their stewardship and respect for this land has carried forward for thousands of years long before settlers named it “Stanley Park”.
