Role Description
Join Stanley Park Ecology for our monthly Bird Counts and support the collection of important data to monitor the local bird biodiversity in Stanley Park. Alongside the Stanley Park Ecology Team Leader and other volunteers, you’ll improve your bird identification and bird watching skills in a fun and supportive environment. All volunteers are welcome as this is a great position for all birding skill levels.
Duties
Support the identification, counting and recording of bird species in Stanley Park.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and bird identification guides (if they have them). We also have some equipment for volunteers to use.
Time Commitment
The monthly Bird Count takes place on Sunday once each month. Volunteers follow a set survey trail around Lost Lagoon and Beaver Lake. The whole circuit takes between four to six hours to complete (depending on the number of birds to document).
Location
Volunteers meet at the Nature House in Lost Lagoon at 10am.
Training
Ongoing training will be provided on:
- Identification of bird species;
- Using established scientific protocol to conduct the survey.
Requirements
- Interest in BC ecology, especially birds;
- Willingness to be active outdoors, in all weather conditions;
- Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old –
- Younger volunteers may be able to join with parental/guardian supervision and approval from SPE. Contact us for more information;

Application Procedure
To sign up to one of our monthly Bird Counts, please register as a volunteer by creating a Better Impact profile. Once approved, you can access the sign-up for Bird Count sessions and receive updates about the program.
