IN-PERSON PROGRAM

Join our Birding with Me program! Get to know our local feathered friends while in community outdoors. Led by biologist Rémi Torrenta, this program will guide participants through encounters with the local birds found in Stanley Park. From the edges of Lost Lagoon through the forested trails and towards the waters of Áx̱achu7 (Beaver Lake), there are many spring and early summer residents that could be found, such as warblers, red-winged blackbirds, flycatchers, and more. No experience necessary, and participants will be able to borrow binoculars from Rémi! This event is part of the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration!

This event is reserved specifically for LGBTQ2S+ individuals, in order to provide a safe and inclusive space to explore birding and nature.

Birding with Me was made possible through the financial support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation’s National Anti-Racism Fund.

ABOUT THE GREATER VANCOUVER BIRD CELEBRATION

Get more familiar with the birds around us during the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration! Organized by a collection of non-profits, artists, and other institutions, the Celebration is a two-week series of events to appreciate the bird species of Greater Vancouver. Events are open to all and most are free, with programs including bird-related workshops, walks, talks, exhibitions, and lectures. Check out all the events here: https://vancouverbirdcelebration.ca/

LEADER BIO

Rémi Torrenta (he/him) is the British Columbia Projects Coordinator and Bird Biologist at Birds Canada, and passionate about anything related to wildlife and wilderness adventures. After getting his Ph.D. in forest bird ecology in eastern Canada, he worked as a Naturalist Guide and Bird Biologist, before moving to the West Coast. Rémi has a strong conviction that conservation goals are better achieved through education and Citizen Science. Let’s dive into the fascinating world of birds and how to identify them!

ABOUT “BIRDING WITH ME” SERIES

Come Birding with Me and learn about our local birds on free, guided bird walks that celebrate diversity in bird and human communities. Inspired by the National Audubon Society’s Let’s Go Birding Together series, Birding with Me walks welcome in experts and participants of shared identity to explore birding together and meet new people.

The land on which we gather is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. Their stewardship and respect for this land has carried forward for thousands of years long before settlers named it “Stanley Park”.
