Mason Bee House Workshop

Come explore the fascinating world of mason bees and learn how to properly care for them! These powerful pollinators are native to our area and are a fantastic way to learn more about bees. Led by Kristen Penhall, participants of this workshop will learn about the bee lifecycle as well as proper management of mason bee houses, plus take a closer look at specimens with a hand lens or microscope. After our time together, you will leave with your very own mason bee house to take home!

The Herons are Here: Colony Tour

Did you know that every spring, Pacific great blue herons take to over 100 nests to raise their young, right here in Stanley Park at the edge of Downtown Vancouver? Join Educator Julia for a special site visit to the heron rookery and learn all about how these beautiful and large birds navigate the canopy, build their nests, and raise their fledglings. You’ll also discover how Stanley Park Ecology supports the heron colony by protecting them from predators and monitoring their success in summer surveys. This is part of our annual series, “The Herons are Here”! This time of year, there is a lot of bustling activity in the canopy as herons maintain their nests and start to lay eggs

Scaup Zone and Scoter Friends: Ducks and Other Waterbirds

Have you noticed the colourful ducks splashing in the waters of the Salish Sea? Join this birding program to learn about two common winter residents of Stanley Park: the Lesser Scaup and the Surf Scoter (plus other waterbirds nearby like the Common Merganser!). Led by avid birder, wildlife photographer, and SPE Nature House Outreach Specialist Frank Lin, this walk will bring participants to the seawall to admire the flocks of birds in the waves and learn about their identifying traits and seasonal behaviours. No birding experience necessary! Feel free to bring your own binoculars or borrow ours.

Stanley Park’s Past, Our Climate Future: Free Collaborative Artmaking Workshop

Join Founder of Creating Climate Resilience Sabrina Guzman Skotnitsky for an evening zine workshop in the Stanley Park Nature House on Lost Lagoon. Through collaborative artmaking with community members using writing, drawing, collage, pastels, and other art media, you’ll delve into Stanley Park’s past to explore lessons and dreams for its future. All artmaking supplies will be provided, and participants will be able to take home their creation—one of the four page collaborative zines from their group.
