Twilight Tour: Beaver Lake is Awake (multiple dates)

As sunset approaches in Stanley Park each day, the wetland ecosystems awake with activity. Join this guided evening tour to learn about the history, ecology, and twilight wildlife of Beaver Lake! Led by an Educator from Stanley Park Ecology, we’ll keep our senses tuned to the signs of wildlife – listening for the croaks of frogs, the buzz of dragonflies, and calls of wetland birds. With any luck, the bats and beavers will emerge for an evening of feeding at the lake. Space is limited to 20 participants.

Hummingbird and Pollinator Walk

Have you walked through the trails of Stanley Park and hear the squeaky, scratchy calls of the Anna’s hummingbird above? Or perhaps looked to admire native flowers and noticed the busy buzzing of pollinating bees? Between the activity in the summer air and the scent of sweet flowers wafting in the breeze, the world of pollination is vibrant and full of energy! Join SPE Educator Julia Taylor on a colourful nature outing to learn about the fascinating world of hummingbirds, bumblebees, and some of the the flowers they rely on. Participants can borrow binoculars as we keep our eyes and ears tuned to nearby pollinators nearby.

What’s that Tree?

Do you find yourself wandering through the Park and wondering about the tall trees that greet you? If you’re curious about learning some beginner tree identification, join SPE Educator Julia for a relaxed outing in Stanley Park! We’ll meet some common forest and urban trees and take a closer look at their bark, cones, leaves, and needles, all while enjoying the summer air in nature. Returning participants will learn some new trees on this walk.

Heron Colony Tour: Fledging Season

Did you know that every spring, Pacific great blue herons take to over 100 nests to raise their young, right here in Stanley Park at the edge of Downtown Vancouver? Join a SPE Educator for a special site visit to the heron rookery and learn all about how these beautiful and large birds navigate the canopy, build their nests, and raise their fledglings. You’ll also discover how Stanley Park Ecology supports the heron colony by monitoring their success during regular surveys and installing anti-predation tools. This is part of our annual series of heron programming! This time of year, the trees are alive with the chorus of begging chicks, and many juveniles are learning how to fly and fledging the nest!

Birds of a Feather: Chicks and Chirps

We’re in the thick of summer, and the young fledglings are beginning to take to the tree branches and learning to fend for themselves. Join us on our casual monthly birding program, Birds of a Feather! This month, join a local birder for a relaxed interpretive outing and learn to identify and appreciate seasonal bird species, keeping our eyes and ears out for juvenile ducks, fast-flying swallows, chirping songbirds, and more. No experience required, just bring your curiosity and take flight!  Participants can borrow binoculars.
