Harper Johnston – Volunteer Coordinator

Harper joined the SPES team in July 2024. She grew up on Gitxsan territory in Hazelton, BC before moving to xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory to study at UBC. She received a BA in Geography, with a major in Environment + Sustainability and a minor in GIS in 2024. Harper's background is primarily in experiential education, sustainable food systems, climate justice, and community engagement. Harper is thrilled to support SPES’s volunteers as they connect with Stanley Park!
In Vancouver, Harper discovered her passion for sustainable food systems and spent several years as a volunteer coordinator and director with Sprouts, a UBC-based food justice organization. She also worked as a river guide and outdoor educator in the Skeena Watershed region, bringing her interest in experiential education and community engagement to life. Harper is passionate about human-ecosystem connectivity and strongly believes in the importance of place-based learning, community conservation, and citizen science. Outside of work, you can find her immersed in her latest craft fixation—lately, solar printing and embroidery! She also enjoys baking, foraging, paddling, and exploring the Pacific Northwest, usually while listening to a good podcast.
