But what about our native pollinators? Here in BC\, we have over 400 species of native bees! Come along for this buzzing outing to learn about their life cycles and ecology — from large fuzzy bumble bees to charming leaf-cutter bees to tiny bees less than 5 mm long!  \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \n\n\n\nAccessibility notes:  This program will take place on some uneven surfaces on mostly gravel pathways. It is unlikely that we will be interacting with bees to the point where there is risk of stinging\, but if you have a bee sting allergy please exercise caution. The forests of Stanley Park undergo many changes and stressors\, from windstorms to invasive species to the hemlock looper moth infestations that arrive every 10-15 years. Come along on our monthly birding program\, Birds of a Feather! This month\, join a local birder for a relaxed interpretive outing and learn to identify and appreciate the birds around us. This program will delve into how various types of maps shape our understanding of the park and influence its physical landscape. You will gain insights into the history of the park through maps\, and how different applications of mapping have shaped this urban landscape. As we walk through the park\, we will create our own maps that tell stories about our experiences. The program is led by our Community Engagement Coordinator\, Chris Rothery. He has degrees in Environmental Studies\, and Landscape Architecture\, which both deal heavily with the use of maps in understanding and designing our environment.  \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \n\n\n\nAccessibility notes: This program will start indoors while seated\, on the second floor which is unfortunately only accessible by stairs. We will then go outside to walk along trails at a moderate pace with moderate inclines on some uneven surfaces\, stopping to draw at various locations. SUMMARY:Vancouver Triathlon Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Role Description\n\n\n\nJoin SPES at the Vancouver Triathlon! SPES has been selected as a partner organization for this year’s Vancouver Triathlon\, and we need your help to make it a success! We’re building a team of enthusiastic volunteers to support the water stations located throughout beautiful Stanley Park. This is a great opportunity to engage with athletes\, contribute to a major event in our community\, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the triathlon. If you have great customer service skills and a passion for helping others\, we would love to have you on our team! \n\n\n\nDuties\n\n\n\nAs a Hydration Station Monitor\, volunteers will: \n\n\n\n\nAssist with the set-up and take-down of the Hydration Stations;\n\n\n\nFill and hand out cups;\n\n\n\nEnsure the area is kept clean and waste is properly disposed of;\n\n\n\nCommunicate with athletes\, utilizing customer service skills.\n\n\n\n\nTime Commitment\n\n\n\nThis is a one-day volunteer opportunity. \n\n\n\nThe Vancouver Triathlon takes place on Monday\, September 2nd. \n\n\n\nWe are looking for volunteers to commit to a shift between 6:00am-11:30am. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nHydration Station volunteering will be taking place in-person in Stanley Park. \n\n\n\nRequirements\n\n\n\n\nBe 16 years of age or older\, or volunteer with a parent or guardian present.\n\n\n\n\nBenefits\n\n\n\n\nGet a front row seat to the Vancouver Triathlon;\n\n\n\nAttend the twice yearly volunteer appreciation events;\n\n\n\nReference letter available after completion of 25 hours of volunteering;\n\n\n\nAccess the benefits available to all SPES volunteers including discounted membership.\n\n\n\n\nApplication Procedure\n\n\n\nIf you would like to volunteer for the event\, please email harper.j@stanleyparkecology.ca with “Vancouver Triathlon Volunteer” in the subject line.

Join us on a Beaver Lake habitat walk where we’ll learn about the homes and lives of these charismatic creatures\, and maybe encounter some if we’re lucky! The forests of Stanley Park undergo many changes and stressors\, from windstorms to invasive species to the hemlock looper moth infestations that arrive every 10-15 years. Let’s welcome the changing seasons in our monthly birding program\, Birds of a Feather. This month\, join local birder Kris Cu for a relaxed interpretive outing and learn to identify and appreciate seasonal bird species. No experience required\, just bring your curiosity and take flight!  \n\n\n\nLEADER BIO \n\n\n\nKris Cu grew up in the bustling city of Manila\, the Philippines and loved watching the Pied Fantails forage around his neighbour’s garden. Upon moving to Canada\, Kris completed a Biological Sciences degree from Simon Fraser University and is now the Digital Media & Outreach Specialist for Birds Canada.
