Native seed production and community outreach to encourage seed-based restoration on southern Vancouver Island
This talk will highlight small-scale native seed production and applications for native seeds in urban settings and emphasize aspects of community education related to seed-based restoration. Reducing barriers to restoration is one of the primary objectives of Satinflower Nurseries. Over the last eleven years, the nursery has worked to encourage the use of native seeds on southern Vancouver Island by making them available and accessible and providing education about the role of seeds in restoration. The nursery produces approximately 200 genetically local native species on a small tract of land using organic growing methods.
Kristen Miskelly, Satinflower Nurseries
Kristen Miskelly (MSc, RPBio) is a biologist who is passionate about native plants, ecology, ecosystem restoration, and native plant propagation. She co-owns Satinflower Nurseries, a native plant and seed nursery that inspires and empowers people to connect with nature through native plants and inspires ecological stewardship through consulting services and community education and collaboration. Kristen’s work is focused on the Prairie-Oak ecosystems of Southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, Canada. She is a steering committee member of the Cascadia Prairie Oak Partnership and a sessional lecturer at the University of Victoria in the schools of Biology, Ecological Restoration, and Environmental Studies.
