SUMMARY:Queer Friends and Feathers: Birding Tech and Tricks
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n Problems using the ticket form below? You can also get tickets here. \n SPES uses the Zeffy platform to process payments\, so your entire purchase goes to us. If you’d like to help Zeffy keep running its services\, you can choose to tip them. If you don’t want to\, choose “Other” in the drop-down menu and then enter $0. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON WORKSHOP \n\n\n\nHave you ever heard the call of a beautiful bird\, just for it to fly away RIGHT before you can get a good look? Or you try to identify a soft-singing songbird\, only for your app to tell you it’s a goose? Find out how to effectively enlist the help of different bird ID apps that can identify by sound or description\, while also avoiding common mistakes and learning other tricks along the way. Join SPES and Dr. Kim Dohms for this engaging workshop to develop your skills in tech-assisted birding to make identification easier for you!  \n\n\n\nPROGRAM LEADER \n\n\n\nKim (they/she)\, PhD\, is currently a species-at-risk biologist at the Canadian Wildlife Service and a co-founder of the greater Vancouver* area chapter of the Feminist Bird Club. Their family’s settler roots are on the Canadian Prairies\, but the rest of them migrated here to (*so-called) Vancouver in 2013. Kim has been fiercely passionate about nature since they were a child\, which eventually led them to their chosen bird-focused career. \n\n\n\nABOUT “Queer Friends and Feathers” SERIES \n\n\n\nWelcome to the SPES’ Queer Friends and Feathers! We’re hosting some free events that focus on different ways we can connect with birds outside in so called “Stanley Park” – whether that is a guided birding tour\, art and photography\, or learning a more specific skill like bird surveying. This series is for queer and trans people that want to learn more about nature together. Come with a friend or alone\, have a snack\, and take it easy – you don’t need any experience to appreciate birds!    \n\n\n\nPROGRAM DETAILS \n\n\n\nIf possible\, please arrive with the apps Merlin and eBird already installed on your phone/tablet due to limited wifi. \n\n\n\nAccessibility notes: This program is located in our office on the second floor of the Stanley Park Pavilion which is currently only accessible by stairs. If you have any questions about accessibility\, please email Julia at publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca         \n\n\n\nThis program will be held at the SPES office in the Stanley Park Dining Pavilion on the second floor (located between the Stanley Park Rose Garden and the Bus Loop).  (1) (2) (3) (4)      \n\n\n\n Terms and Conditions \n\n\n\n(1) Registration required – NO DROP-INS ARE ALLOWED.  Fees for this program are based on a sliding scale – you choose what you pay!    \n\n\n\n(2) Weather dependent - Please check your email 12 hours before the program date and time to confirm it has not been cancelled due to inclement weather such as high winds\, heavy rain\, or extreme heat.     \n\n\n\n(3) Program Availability – Program full or you cannot attend this day or time?  Sign up here to be notified when the program runs in the future.    \n\n\n\n(4) Cancellation policy – We refund cancellations due to illness to keep everyone healthy\, but the number of recent cancellations is impacting our capacity to run these programs. If you must cancel\, please let us know if you need a refund or if you are able to help us offer affordable programs for the public by donating your registration fee. (This is one way we can all subsidize programs in this changing economic climate and ensure these programs are available on a sliding scale.)         \n\n\n\n     \n\n\n\nWe gratefully acknowledge that the land on which we gather and help steward is the unceded and traditional territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation\, and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation. Since time immemorial\, Coast Salish peoples have lived reciprocally with the land\, harvesting and cultivating foods and medicines and practicing ceremony. The abundance of these lands and waters\, which enables us to live\, work\, and play here today\, is a result of the past and on-going stewardship and advocacy of the Coast Salish peoples.
