IN-PERSON PROGRAM

Ever wondered who those slimy-looking things down by the seawall actually are? Come explore Stanley Park during a low tide to see one of the biggest seaweed hotspots in Vancouver! Join seaweed scientist and enthusiast Ruby Burns to learn the names of our local marine “fronds” with a morning coffee in hand, plus some light breakfast snacks. This event is part of Vancouver Kelp Fest, a celebration of our unique urban coastline. Come stop by Kelp Fest’s main event on August 23rd at the Museum of Vancouver to eat kelp snacks, make seaweed art, and learn from local restoration experts.

LEADER BIO

Ruby is a Master’s student studying kelp evolution at UBC’s Martone lab, and is the founder of Vancouver Kelp Fest. They will talk your ear off about anything seaweed if you give them the chance. By coming to this workshop, you are giving them that chance.

PROGRAM DETAILS 

Accessibility notes: This program requires accessing the beach via a steep ramp with driftwood at the base, which can be tricky to navigate with mobility issues, as well as walking out over slippery, rocky areas of the intertidal zone. If you have any questions about accessibility, please email Julia at publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca      

Meeting Location: This program will meet at the Lumberman’s Arch Public Washrooms and proceed to the beach. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign in.   

Terms and Conditions

(1) Registration required - NO DROP-INS ARE ALLOWED.  This program is fee as part of Kelp Fest!

(2)  Cancellation policy  – We offer partial refunds for program fees up to 7 days before the program. A 20% administration fee applies. Cancellations with less than the required notice are non-refundable. We do not refund fees for late or missed programs. Please request a refund by emailing publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca. You may also choose to support our public education programming by donating your registration fee. 

(3) Weather – Our tours typically run rain or shine. Rarely, programs may be postponed or cancelled due extreme weather like high winds or extreme heat.  We will alert you by email if the program needs to be rescheduled. If the program cannot be rescheduled, refunds will be offered with a 20% administration fee or you may choose to transfer your ticket to another program of the same value.
