IN-PERSON PROGRAM
Did you know that every spring, Pacific great blue herons take to over 100 nests to raise their young, right here in Stanley Park at the edge of Downtown Vancouver? Join Educator Julia for a special site visit to the heron rookery and learn all about how these beautiful and large birds navigate the canopy, build their nests, and raise their fledglings. You’ll also discover how Stanley Park Ecology supports the heron colony by monitoring their success during regular surveys and installing anti-predation tools. This is part of our annual series of heron programming! This time of year, the first hatchlings can be heard making their chorus of ‘tik-tik-tik’ sounds in the nests above, as other adult herons continue to lay and incubate eggs.
This event is part of the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration!
ABOUT THE GREATER VANCOUVER BIRD CELEBRATION
Get more familiar with the birds around us during the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration! Organized by a collection of non-profits, artists, and other institutions, the Celebration is a two-week series of events to appreciate the bird species of Greater Vancouver. Events are open to all and most are free, with programs including bird-related workshops, walks, talks, exhibitions, and lectures. Check out all the events here: https://vancouverbirdcelebration.ca/
PROGRAM DETAILS
Accessibility note: This program requires moving on gravel, grass, and uneven pavement from the Nature House on Lost Lagoon, to the Stanley Park Great Blue Heron rookery (near the tennis courts and Stanley Park Brewing). Once there, we won’t be moving around that much. If you have any questions about the accessibility of this program, please email Julia at publiced@stanleyparkecology.ca.
This program will meet at the Nature House on Lost Lagoon (located underneath the Lost Lagoon viewing platform near the intersection of Chilco and Alberni Streets). Please try to arrive 10 minutes in advance of the program.
We will formally end the program at the heron colony, with the option to walk back towards the Nature House afterwards.

The land on which we gather is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples. Their stewardship and respect for this land has carried forward for thousands of years long before settlers named it “Stanley Park”.
