Volunteer Board Opportunity- Treasurer

Role Description

We are seeking a new member for our Board of Directors to replace our retiring Treasurer. We welcome persons with diverse backgrounds and interest areas, but currently are specifically seeking a person with accounting expertise.

Following a governance model, our volunteer Board sets direction, acts as trustee of the organization’s assets, maintains legal requirements, and sets the organization’s standards of conduct. For more information: https://www.stanleyparkecology.ca/.

Duties

Directors are expected to:

  • Be informed about SPES’s mission, governance, and organizational matters.
  • Attend Board and Board committee meetings as well as the Annual General Meeting.
  • Participate actively in the Board’s program of reading and discussing materials intended to further decolonization.

The Treasurer’s responsibilities, in addition to the general duties of a Director, are to:

  • Ensure the maintenance of financial records as are necessary to comply with the B.C. Societies Act.
  • Work with the Executive Director to prepare the annual budget and present the budget for Board approval.
  • Work with the Executive Director to prepare a quarterly Treasurer’s report and present the report at the corresponding Board meeting.
  • Review the draft annual financial statements and work with external financial professionals to facilitate the conduct of the Annual Review Engagement.
  • Present the annual financial statements and financial review to the Board and to the membership at the AGM.
  • Chair the Board’s Finance Committee.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for the keeping of records, tax compliance, the audit trail for all transactions, the approval of requested expenses, internal financial controls, and the proper filing of all financial records.

Time Commitment

Directors serve for a two-year term which may be renewed. Directors are asked to contribute approximately eight hours per month to attend Board meetings and serve on one of the Board’s standing committees: Governance, Finance, Reconciliation, People, and Marketing and Communications.

Requirements

  • Pass and maintain a criminal record check;
  • Have a strong background in finance, accounting or a related field.
