Volunteer Board of Directors

Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) is a volunteer based organization providing education, research, and conservation rooted in Stanley Park.

We are seeking new members for our Board of Directors and welcome persons with diverse backgrounds and interest areas. In particular we are seeking Board members with expertise or experience in the following areas:

  • Indigenous perspective
  • Legal
  • Human Resources
  • Fundraising and Development

Previous Board experience is desirable but not necessary.

Directors serve for a two-year term which may be renewed. Directors are asked to attend eight scheduled meetings per year and serve on one of the Board’s standing committees: Governance, Finance, Marketing and Communications, Reconciliation, and People (Human Resources). Directors are expected to:

  • Maintain an active SPES membership;
  • Become fully informed about SPES’s mission and governance as well as its organizational matters;
  • Attend Board and Board committee meetings;
  • Attend the Annual General Meeting.

The 2023 Annual General Meeting will be held on 19 July. The deadline for applications is 30 June. Candidates will be interviewed by the People Committee, which will present a nominations report to the AGM with a list of recommended candidates. Candidates not on the recommended list are also eligible to stand for election.

SPES is a registered charitable organization, incorporated in 1988 and governed under the B.C. Societies Act.  Following a governance model, the volunteer Board sets direction, acts as trustee of the organization’s assets, maintains legal requirements, and sets the organization’s standards of conduct.
