Volunteer Opportunity: Board Treasurer

SPES is seeking a new member for its volunteer Board of Directors to replace our retiring Treasurer. We welcome persons with diverse backgrounds and interest areas, but currently are specifically seeking a person with accounting expertise.

The Treasurer’s responsibilities, in addition to the general duties of a Director, are to:

● Ensure the maintenance of financial records as are necessary to comply with the B.C. Societies Act.

● Ensure the Society has at least one account with a chartered bank, credit union, or trust company for the deposit of funds.

● Work with the Executive Director to prepare and circulate a quarterly Treasurer’s report and present the report at the corresponding Board meeting.

● Work with the Executive Director to prepare and circulate the annual budget and present the budget for Board approval.

● Review the draft financial statements.

● Ensure an external Financial Review is conducted annually.

● Ensure the draft Financial Review is presented to the Board on an annual basis.

● Present the Financial Review to the membership at the AGM.

● Call the motion at AGM to appoint an accounting firm to do the Financial Review.

● Act as a resource to staff and other Board members on financial matters.

SPES is a registered charitable organization, incorporated in 1988 and governed under the B.C. Societies Act. Our mission is to provide environmental education, research, and conservation rooted in Stanley Park. Following a governance model, the volunteer Board sets direction, acts as trustee of the organization’s assets, maintains legal requirements, and sets the organization’s standards of conduct. Directors serve for a two-year term which may be renewed. Board members are asked to attend eight scheduled meetings per year and serve on one of the Board’s standing committees: Governance, Finance, Marketing and Communications, and People (Human Resources). Directors are expected to:

● Maintain an active SPES membership.

● Commit to the work of the SPES.

● Attend Board and Board committee meetings.

● Become fully informed about SPES’s mission as well as its organizational matters.

● Attend the Annual General Meeting.
