The State of the Park Report for the Ecological Integrity of Stanley Park 2020 (SOPEI) is now available here!
SPES is pleased to announce the launch of its “State of the Park Report for the Ecological Integrity of Stanley Park 2020.” This decade-long ecological assessment provides a snapshot of how Stanley Park’s ecosystems are faring, and how they are responding to natural and human impacts.
In December 2006, Stanley Park was struck by a major windstorm resulting in substantial disturbance – with 10,000 trees snapping or falling to the ground. The storm triggered the need for extensive restoration work and raised awareness about the lack of ecological information available for the Park and the need for an assessment of its ecological integrity.
For these reasons, in 2010, the first State of the Park Report for the Ecological Integrity of Stanley Park (SOPEI) was created by the Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) based on similar reports created by Parks Canada for National Parks. This report was designed with a strong focus on the ecological aspects of the Park and a detailed biophysical inventory section.
Ten years later, SPES released it second State of the Park Report, establishing a long-term monitoring program to assess the ecological integrity of the Park, and to review the conservation successes that have taken place in the decade following the first SOPEI release.
SOPEI Report – the objectives
- Establishing a framework to assess the current state of ecological integrity
- Describing what is happening with respect to the Park’s major ecosystems and the potential stressors acting on them
- Identifying gaps in ecological knowledge
The SOPEI Summary Report is available here.
