From Douglas squirrels to skunk cabbage, and Seawall bike riders to towering totem poles, close to a hundred shutterbugs snapped and submitted more than six hundred images as part of a photo contest organized by Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES).

The contest ran from April 6-14 and was judged by Vancouver-based wildlife photographer, National Geographic Explorer Paul Colangelo, musician Ben Worcester of Said the Whale, and entrepreneur and award-winning blogger (Miss 604) Rebecca Bollwitt.

Louise Pedersen from SPES said: “We are so grateful to the many local photographers who took part in SPES’ first ever photo contest. We were excited to see the quality and the originality of the submitted images and hope our community will help celebrate the beauty and wonder of Stanley Park by visiting our website to take a look at the photo galleries.

“Choosing among the 600 images was a very difficult task given the high quality and diversity of images submitted, and we are very thankful to the jury, Paul Colangelo, Rebecca Bollwitt and Ben Worcester, who generously donated their time to judge the contest for us.”

Thirteen-year old Zachary Fedder, who won the first prize for the youth category said this about his winning image: “I was at a calm spot in a stream and there was a Canada goose in the middle grooming himself. I took pictures of him for a while. I missed him washing for the first time but the second time, I was ready. I snapped many pictures of him dunking under with water spraying around but this one is by far the best.”
