Environmental Educator – Nature Camping with Students


We are seeking a creative, innovative, and passionate educator to deliver outdoor nature education for school groups as part of SPES’ outdoor camping program.

Nature Ninjas Urban Camping is a two-day overnight, outdoor education, curriculum-based camping program for students in grades 4 to 7.  This program is the first experience many students have with camping in a tent, and it fuses curriculum learning with hands-on experiences in a fun and memorable way.  As the Environmental Educator for the day portions of Nature Ninjas, you will guide the students on educational and fun journeys through Stanley Park’s ecosystems. The work hours for this position are approximately 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday and the position does not include camping overnight in the Park.


As the Nature Ninjas Environmental Educator, you will:

  • Lead full-day, curriculum-based outdoor environmental education programs for an entire class of grade 4 to 7 students
  • Assist in the development and ongoing review of program materials
  • Lead educational programs in the forest, wetland and intertidal ecosystems
  • Teach basic outdoor survival and food safety practices
  • Organize and purchase food supplies for camps each week
  • Prepare equipment, activities and inventory for the camping season
  • Communicate effectively with teachers via email, over the phone and in person
  • Maintain program equipment and materials
  • Train, schedule and manage volunteers
  • Ensure that the program is run in a professional and safe manner
  • Troubleshoot any logistical issues that may arise
  • Attend regular meetings and prepare a final report for the School Programs Manager


  • Experience teaching or leading groups of elementary children
  • Experience in outdoor education, nature interpretation, outdoor youth camps and/or leadership education
  • Background in science/environmental studies and BC forest or wetland ecology
  • Comfortable in leading groups of up to 30 students with volunteer and teacher support
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Willingness to work outdoors rain or shine
  • Fluency in both English and French is an asset
  • First Aid certification with CPR
  • BC driver's license
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check with vulnerable sector search
  • FoodSafe Certification

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, booking dependent

Pay: $17.38 hourly, plus 4% in lieu of benefits

Start date: April 3, 2019

End date: July 5, 2019
